Scratchboard is made by covering white cardboard with a layer of india ink. You then scratch the ink away to reveal the white underneath. Or you can cheat, like me, and buy the scratchboard already prepared - which always looks more uniform. This was a pain to scan; It's much larger than my scanner, and the many thin lines made precise assembly critical!
